FUNDRAISING
Dear Temple Friends:
Last year the Nechung Drayang Ling sold a small parcel of land close to
the temple. With the proceeds, we were able to pay off the mortgage on
the 25 acres of temple land, as well as other loans acquired over the
years. We are happy to report that Nechung Dorje Drayang Ling is now
completely debt free! Some of the funds were invested into long overdue
projects; such as construction of the lotus/koi pond with a trickling
waterfall, renovating the upstairs bathroom and guest rooms in the
Retreat Center and doing work in the organic coffee orchard. Currently,
our projects are the strengthening of the foundation for earthquakes
under the Retreat Center and installing bamboo flooring. Future projects
include a complete renovation of the main temple kitchen next year.
As a non-profit organization in the remote Ka’u District on the Island
of Hawaii, Nechung Dorje Drayang Ling has survived the challenges of
funding and a small staff. We have been here since 1973, one of the
first Tibetan Buddhist centers in the West. It has been our conviction
since the beginning that if we work wholeheartedly towards establishing
a world peace sanctuary, we would overcome all obstacles and succeed.
True to our belief, with the support of friends such as you, the temple
has flourished; and serves as an inspiration to many and has touched the
lives of people from all over the world.Temple funding primarily comes
from individual guests and group bookings in the Retreat Center, sales
in the Temple Store and donations. As a non-profit, we attempt to do a
fundraiser each year to raise money for special projects and to help
cover the temple’s overhead. It has been several years since our last
fundraiser, now it is time.We have some very special gifts, in
ppreciation for your generous donations. There are two beautiful Giclees
– one of White Tara by Mayumi Oda, a renowned artist; and an appliqué
Red Guru Padmasambhava by Venerable Gyaltsen Choephel from Nechung
Monastery. Other gifts include a sepia poster of His Holiness the Dalai
Lama at the Volcano National Park in 1980, a CD of traditional monastic
chanting from Nechung Monastery in Dharamsala and an organic T-shirt
with the temple image. We also have hand made scrolls on natural paper,
with wise words of advice from H.H. the Dalai Lama.Thank you for your
continued support! Donations can be made by check
or credit card.
With Our Best Wishes,
Michael and Marya Schwabe

TEMPLE
KITCHEN
The temple kitchen built in 1933 has served as the community
center for decades. Until the mid-sixties, it was the dining hall
for the Japanese Buddhists and plantation workers.

A remodeling was done
in 1979, and since then, from this homey room that everyone loves
to gather in, thousands and thousands of meals have been prepared
to serve the public, temple workshops and retreats. It is now (and
has been for awhile) in need of a major renovation and expansion,
new roof and commercial equipment.
PUBLIC
BATHROOMS
The
two public bathrooms behind the main temple also need attention
and renovation. Used constantly by the public, visitors and
retreat participants alike, these facilities were constructed
around the same era as the temple kitchen.
MEDITATION
RETREAT CABINS and GUEST COTTAGES
Yearly,
we receive requests from people for private cabins to do personal
meditation practice and retreat. Potential visitors have also
asked for individual guest cottages. This has been a long
projected goal for the temple. Several sites have been cleared and
ready for buildings. The vision is to design the cabins &
cottages with an Asian-Pacific theme, each having a small kitchen
and private bathroom. The cabins will be for single residents; the
cottages will be suitable for double occupancy.
Your
support is very much needed and appreciated. Please contact
